Limit price orders

What are limit price orders and how do they work?

A limit order lets you buy or sell a stock at the exact price you choose, instead of the current market price. Your order doesn't execute immediately; it stays open and only completes when the market reaches the price you set. It's like setting a price alert that also executes the trade automatically for you.

What's the difference between a market order and a limit price order?

A market order executes immediately at the best price available. It's fast, but you don't control the exact price you pay or receive. A limit price order lets you set an exact price and won't execute until the market reaches that price (or a better one).

How do I place a limit price order?

  1. Open the stock you want to trade.
  2. Tap Trade and select Limit buy or sell order as the order type.
  3. Enter your limit price: the price at which you want to buy or sell.
  4. Enter the number of shares you want to trade (whole shares only).
  5. Choose the validity period for your order:
    • 1 day: the order cancels automatically at the end of the day if it wasn't completed.
    • 90 days: the order stays active for up to 90 days, until it completes or you cancel it.
  6. Review the order summary and confirm.

Your funds will be reserved and your order will appear in the Activity tab with a Pending status.

What happens after I place a limit price order?

  • Your funds stay locked while the order is open. You won't be able to use them for other trades or withdrawals until the order completes or cancels.
  • Once the market reaches your limit price, the order executes automatically.
  • You'll get a notification when your order completes (fully or partially), expires, or is canceled.

What is a partial execution?

Sometimes only part of your order can be completed at the limit price you set. For example, if you placed an order for 100 shares but only 50 were available at that price, you'd get a partial execution of 50 shares. Your activity will show the progress (for example, "Amount sold: 50 of 100"), and the funds reserved for the shares that weren't filled will be released automatically.

Can I get a better price than the one I set?

Yes. If the market price is better than your limit price at the time of execution, we'll complete your order at the best price. For example, if you place a buy limit order at 170 USD and the stock is available at 169 USD, your order will execute at 169 USD. The amount saved will appear in your order details.

When does my order expire?

  • 1-day orders expire at market close if they weren't completed.
  • 90-day orders expire after 90 days if they weren't completed.

In both cases, your locked funds are automatically released when the order expires.

Can I cancel a limit price order?

Yes. As long as your order hasn't completed, you can cancel it from the Activity section. Once canceled, your reserved funds will be available immediately.

Other things to keep in mind

  • Limit price orders are only available for whole shares (fractional shares aren't supported).
  • Orders are placed in USD.
  • 90-day orders stay active for a maximum of 90 days.
  • Your balance will show a "Reserved" amount while the order is open.
