What is Margin Level and when does liquidation happen?

Modified on:

Your Margin Level is the measure of your account's health. It helps you know when you're at risk of liquidation.

Key definitions

  • Margin Level (ML): Your Net Equity divided by your total debt (including accrued interest).
  • Maintenance Margin Ratio (MMR): The threshold that triggers liquidation, currently shown as 1.10× in the platform.

What you'll see:

Healthy

  • Magin Level: ≥ ~1.50×
  • What you'll see: Green indicator: Everything's working normally

Warning

  • Magin Level: ~1.30–1.49×
  • What you'll see: Amber indicator: Advisory state, no hard blocks beyond your normal Trading Power. We surface this as an early warning so you can add collateral, reduce exposure, or repay debt before reaching Margin Call.

At Risk (Margin Call)

  • Magin Level: ~1.10–1.29×
  • What you'll see: Red indicator: You'll get a notification via the platform and email. New orders that would increase or worsen your debt are blocked, and outbound Margin Wallet transfers are blocked. You can still close open positions, add collateral, or repay borrowed funds.

Liquidation

  • Magin Level: ≤ 1.10×
  • What you'll see: Red indicator: Your entire account is liquidated automatically to repay debt

Your Margin Level determines what actions you can take on your Margin Wallet:

  • Healthy and Warning: There are no hard blocks beyond your normal Trading Power limits. Warning is an advisory state: we surface it so you can react early, but trades and transfers remain available. You'll receive a margin call notification as you approach the liquidation threshold.
  • At Risk (Margin Call): The platform blocks new orders that would increase or worsen your debt, and blocks outbound transfers from your Margin Wallet. You can still close positions, add collateral, or repay borrowed funds.
  • Liquidation: When your Margin Level reaches the Maintenance Margin Ratio (1.10×), Bitso automatically liquidates open positions across your entire Margin Wallet to repay debt. Any surplus after debt, interest, and fees is returned to your Margin Wallet.

Where to check your Margin Level

  • On the order ticket (with color coding and details).
  • In the Margin Level modal located in the upper part of the Margin Wallet side bar menu. It shows your current level, the maintenance threshold, and helpful guidance.
