Create an API key on Bitso

Modified on:

To connect your account to an external platform through the API, you need an active API key. Follow these steps to create one from the web version of your account.

Before you start

  • You can only create API keys from the web version of Bitso, while logged in to your account.
  • You need to have two-step verification turned on. Turn on two-step verification before you continue.

How to create an API key

  1. Log in to your account from the web (not from the app).
  2. Click your profile icon in the top right corner.
  3. In the left menu, select "API".
  4. Click "Add new API". If you don't have any active keys yet, the list will appear empty.
  5. Read the security message, check the box, and click the green button to continue.
  6. Name your key so you can identify it easily.
  7. If you want, add IP restrictions (up to 5 addresses) or leave this field blank.
  8. Choose the permissions for the key. Check the table below to see what each one does.
  9. Enter your two-step verification code. Once you validate it, you will see your key and secret key. Save them somewhere secure, because they only appear once.

Key permissions

Permission What it allows
Buy/sell orders Trade and view your transactions.
Balance inquiry View the balance of all your crypto wallets.
Account information Access your personal data and account statement.
Security actions Restrict withdrawals or deactivate your account.

Good to know

  • You can have up to 6 active API keys at the same time.
  • You can restrict the addresses allowed to receive withdrawals with this key, except for XRP.
  • You can also restrict the IP address allowed to make requests with this key.

Didn't work? Here's what to do

  • If you already have 6 active keys and can't create a new one, delete a key you no longer use and try again.
  • If your two-step verification code doesn't work, check that your verification app's time is synced and enter the current code.
  • If you lose access to the device with your verification app and you no longer have your recovery code, contact our support team via chat to recover access to your account.
  • If you didn't save your key and secret key when they appeared, you won't be able to see them again. Delete that key and create a new one.
