What can I do to increase cybersecurity at home?

Modified on:

Applying these tips in your daily life will help keep your information secure:

  • Set strong passwords for systems or computers, change them regularly and never share them. Never use the same password for your mobile apps, email accounts and websites.
  • Install an antivirus and keep it up to date. No antivirus is 100% effective, but regular scans will help identify and eliminate any virus that may be in your system.
  • Keep your operating system and applications up to date. Always download and apply available security updates, as this will help protect your devices from known vulnerabilities.
  • Browse responsibly and safely. Make sure that the websites you visit are official. If possible, type the address of the site directly into your browser. Close any work sessions that you have used during your workday or on student platforms.
  • Increase your personal network's safety. Set up your wireless (Wi-Fi) network, creating strong passwords, renaming the network, and enabling strong security protocols like WPA3 and WPA2.
  • Be wary of social engineering attacks. Phishing, vishing and smishing campaigns have increased in these times, taking advantage of fear and uncertainty. Always verify that any messages, emails and calls you receive come from trusted and secure sources.
  • Be careful when downloading apps. Download applications only from the official site and, in the case of mobile devices/tablets, do it directly from each operating system's official store. Review the required permissions and settings before installing them.
  • Back up critical data on a regular basis. This will allow you to recover your system and information quickly in the event of a system failure or malware attack.
  • Update your settings: Hardware and software usually have factory-set security settings (users, passwords, operating modes, etc.). Personalizing your devices, changing passwords and user accesses will, by default, increase your security.
  • Protect all internet-connected devices. Set up passwords, PINs or other advanced security measures and, if possible, disable voice assistants that may be actively listening to your conversations.
