What is Worldcoin (WLD)?

About WLD

WLD is the native token of the World Network (formerly Worldcoin), a global digital identity and finance project co-founded by Sam Altman. It aims to build a universal proof-of-personhood system through biometric verification using devices called Orbs. Users who verify their humanity or personhood receive a World ID and can claim recurring WLD tokens rewards. The token supports both protocol governance and identity-based voting via World ID, and functions as the currency for services on World Chain. WLD is live on Ethereum, bridged to Optimism, and powers transactions on World Chain, World Network’s dedicated L2.

Key Points

  • Proof of personhood: Users scan their iris using the Orb device to receive a unique and anonymous World ID.
  • Decentralized identity layer: Enables apps and services to verify personhood without compromising privacy.
  • Governance token: WLD holders can vote on proposals shaping the future of the protocol.
  • Multichain presence: Issued on Ethereum, bridged to Optimism, and used across the World Network via World Chain.

FAQs

  1. What is WLD used for?

WLD is mainly used for governance and as a reward for personhood-verified users. It can also be used in apps built on World Chain.

  1. How does World ID work?

After scanning their iris with the Orb, users receive a zero-knowledge proof-based ID. This allows platforms to confirm a person is human, without knowing who they are.

  1. How can I buy WLD on Bitso?
    1. Log in to your Bitso account or sign up if you don’t have one.
    2. Go to “Buy/Sell” and select any available fiat currency (MXN, ARS, BRL, COP, or USD) as your base.
    3. Choose WLD as the token you want to purchase.
    4. Enter the amount, review the details, and confirm your transaction.
    5. You can track the token’s performance directly in the app.

Note: WLD is only available through conversions on Bitso. It is not supported on Bitso Alpha, and deposits from and withdrawals to external wallets are disabled. However, you can send and receive WLD between Bitso users via Bitso Transfer.

Tokenomics

  • Initial supply: 10 billion WLD
  • Circulating supply: 1.79 billion
  • Distribution: Grants for verified users, foundation reserves, ecosystem development

Example Use Case

A user in Argentina scans her iris with an Orb at an official location and receives her World ID. She can now claim WLD tokens regularly and use her ID to access dApps requiring proof of humanity without revealing personal info.
